6 Tips to Drink More Water

Agua, Voda, H2O or otherwise known as water. It is essential to humans, and I would argue more so than your iPhone….I know it's a bold statement, but it's true.

According to Medical News Today, water makes up roughly 60% of the human body. It varies because of age, sex, and hydration levels. But guys, that's crazy - that means that more than half of you is just water sloshing around! I know that this is not new information to you, but just think about how incredible that is for a second.

Also, not only are we made up of water, but it has crazy health benefits like; helping create saliva - which we need to break down food. It regulates your body temperature, which is vital on hot summer days. It helps with digestion and prevents constipation. Feeling bloated and not being able to poop is the WORST! It can elevate your mood, it keeps your skin bright and beautiful, and it helps fight off illness. I can go on and on and on, but the bottom line is drinking water is the bomb for everyone!

I know, I know, you might have questions. Like….

So, exactly how much water should I be drinking in a day? Health experts commonly recommend 2 litres a day, but it depends on your height, weight, how active you are, and if you drink caffeine or alcohol. If you are super tall, super active, and like your coffee and beer, you will need more than 2 litres.

An easy way to tell how much water you need is to check your pee. You probably already know this, but the yellower your pee, the more you need water. The golden spot (pun intended) is when your pee is a light yellow. Next time you need to tinkle, check out the goods to see if you need more water. If your pee is clear, you can ease off.

Another question you might ask is: what if I don't like water or I always forget to drink it. How do I remember? Well, I'm so glad you asked! Here are six tips to get you drinking that agua so you can feel great all day.

  1. Start off your day with a big glass of water (250 - 500 mL). Put a glass on your nightstand the night before so you don't forget. You are so thirsty first thing in the morning because you haven't had any water. You would never go 7-8 hours during the day without some water, so make sure you are rehydrating!

  2. Set an alarm on your phone, or put a sticky note on your computer to remind yourself to drink. If you start ignoring the alarm or sticky note, change the time or move the note, switching it up will help your brain from being complacent.

  3. Try your water at different temperatures. Some people like room temp, others like it ice cold, some hot. Figure out what works for you.

  4. Always have a water bottle with you. Add it to your checklist before you leave the house. Do I have my keys, wallet, water bottle….check! You are ready to roll.

  5. Drink it with a straw - a metal or reusable, just because you are parched doesn't mean we have to kill the planet!

  6. Try adding some lemon, mint, cucumber to sass up your water.

The last question you might ask is, will I have to pee more if I drink more water? Yes, your body will need time to adapt, so you will find that you will be frequenting the bathroom more often. However, your body will adjust. Just give it time. On average you should be peeing every 2-3 hours.
